Do I have to be flexible to practice yoga? The answer is NO. If you are not flexible, yoga is a great way to BECOME more flexible. Your size, age or level of flexibility doesn’t matter. Maybe you need to ask yourself what flexibility means to you: Do you want to be able to touch your toes, or is your goal to have your leg behind your head? The more impressive the pose looks, the longer it will take to get there. Be very patient and gentle with yourself – if you push too far, you might overstretch and hurt yourself. Your yoga teacher will have in mind your flexibility and during the practice she or he will guide you to alternative yoga posture so you will get all the benefits and not injure yourself on your path to more flexible body. Beginners who are overweight or obese can and should begin a yoga practice, just be sure to check with your doctor about the intended exercise program first. Starting a yoga practice can be challenging for any beginner but the anxiety of attending class can be even greater for full-figured beginners. Before attending a yoga class, speak to your yoga teacher. By expressing your concerns and limitations your yoga teacher will make modifications, maybe even ahead of time rather than during class. This is particularly great if you are concerned about unwanted extra attention or feeling singled out. Maybe you can consider taking few one-on-one classes.
